Physiotherapy for Osteoarthritis Sydney

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition affecting joints – the cushioning cartilage between bones breaks down due to wear and tear, causing pain and stiffness in affected joints. Osteoarthritis symptoms are usually experienced in the hands, knees, and hip joints.

While there is no cure for osteoarthritis, physiotherapy is a proven way to relieve osteoarthritis pain and restore mobility. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, physiotherapy treatment is one of the most effective ways to manage symptoms and improve day-to-day comfort.

Movement Lab offers physiotherapy in Sydney for individuals with osteoarthritis. Our osteoarthritis physios can provide effective pain relief, reduce stiffness in affected joints, and strengthen the surrounding muscles for improved mobility. We have a holistic approach to treating osteoarthritis, with the ultimate goal of helping clients live pain-free.

How Does Physiotherapy Work to Treat Osteoarthritis?

Physiotherapy addresses musculoskeletal conditions, which include osteoarthritis-affected joints and the surrounding muscles. Physiotherapists apply a combination of manual therapy and strengthening exercises to reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis and promote flexibility in joints.

There is concrete evidence on the effectiveness of physiotherapy for osteoarthritis. According to a 2018 study, physiotherapy was found to be as effective as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications and 2-3 times more effective than paracetamol in reducing knee osteoarthritis pain.

Physiotherapy for osteoarthritis works by strengthening the supporting muscles around the affected joint, reducing pressure on the joint. This results in less pain and stiffness, which are two of the most common symptoms of osteoarthritis. Regular physiotherapy sessions can result in minimising the symptoms of osteoarthritis, pain relief, and improved overall mobility!

What Does Physiotherapy Treatment for Osteoarthritis Involve?

During the first few sessions, physiotherapists will typically involve gentle soft-tissue manual therapy on the area surrounding the joint to relieve pain and pressure/inflammation within the joint. Once we’re able to find some pain relief and reduced stiffness, we can then start to introduce treatments aimed at improving overall joint function.

To improve mobility within the joint, we will facilitate strengthening and stretching exercises that target specific muscles and joint movements. These exercises are done in-clinic with physiotherapist support, as well as individually at home.

Physiotherapists will also recommend lifestyle changes that can reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis, including:

  • Moderate exercise – Regular, non-intensive exercise such as daily walks can promote improved flexibility and continue to strengthen muscles.
  • Adjustments to your diet – Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet can help lose excess weight, which results in less pressure on lower body joints like the knees and hips.
  • Hot and cold treatments – Applying heat or cooling packs to affected joints can provide temporary relief from osteoarthritis pain and reduce inflammation.
  • Using assistive devices – Physiotherapists may provide splints or braces to be worn around affected joints for added support.

Benefits of Physiotherapy for Osteoarthritis

Pain Relief

Physiotherapy is 2-3 times more effective at reducing osteoarthritis pain than regular painkillers like paracetamol. While chronic pain is a persistent symptom of osteoarthritis, individuals can find lasting relief through regular physiotherapy treatment and carry out regular activities without being hindered by pain.

Increased Range of Motion

Physiotherapy helps reduce joint stiffness, allowing joints to move more naturally and flex without discomfort. This improved range of motion allows individuals to perform tasks that were once hard to do alone, like climbing stairs or getting up from a seated position.

Strengthen Muscles

Exercise therapy strengthens the muscles surrounding affected joints, which takes some of the supporting pressure off the joint. Stronger muscles results in more flexibility in the joint – drastically reducing osteoarthritis symptoms.

Better Mobility and Balance

Mobility and balance are closely linked to having a strong and stable musculoskeletal system. Physiotherapy enhances muscle strength and joint flexibility, enabling individuals to move more effectively and naturally.

I was grateful when I told my symptoms to the lovely lady she knew what I was talking about and ways we could improve things and that I wasn’t alone. Anastasia is a miracle worker! I'm a keen runner and I started seeing her a few months ago after a couple of broken backs and a (new) torn hammy. She diagnosed my hammy problem quickly and efficiently, provided immediate relief through some deep massage to allow me to survive a few more important runs before my wedding (honeymoon = rest), and has helped me rebuild through focused strength work and home exercises. She obviously cares about her patients and enjoys helping them achieve their goals. I'm now running regularly and pain free again! Thanks Anastasia 🙂
